About this website

Privacy Notice

Controller

The controller is the website operator listed in the Legal Notice.

Visiting the website

When the site is requested, the hosting provider processes technical connection data (such as IP address, request time, requested file, referring page, browser and operating system) to deliver the site, maintain security and diagnose faults. When you open the interactive 3D globe, your browser also loads the open-source three.js library from the jsDelivr content-delivery network, which receives technical connection data including your IP address to deliver those files. This data is processed under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in providing a secure, reliable educational website) and is retained only as long as required to operate and secure the site or meet legal obligations.

Cookies, storage and analytics

This website operates without advertising, behavioral profiling or optional analytics cookies. It provides no accounts, comments, newsletter registration or contact form.

External source links

Links to publications and institutions open third-party websites. Those operators process data under their own privacy notices. Settlements does not control those websites merely because it links to them.

Your rights

Subject to the GDPR’s conditions, you may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction or data portability, and may object to processing. Consent may be withdrawn for the future. You may also complain to a competent data-protection supervisory authority.

Editorial Policy

Private hobby project

Settlements is a private hobby project created out of a passion for history. While we strive to base our stories on archaeological and historical research, we cannot guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the information provided.

AI creation and human review

We use AI tools to help draft texts, generate illustrations and audio, and explore historical sources. Every piece of content then goes through human editorial work to check the facts and present the material in a clear, engaging way for visitors.

Feedback and suggestions

We very much welcome any feedback, corrections, or suggestions for modifying, extending, or removing content. Please contact the website operator listed in the Legal Notice.

Copyright & Credits

Editorial content and compilation

Unless otherwise stated, all original Settlements texts, audio narrations, source code, interface design, and the selection, curation and arrangement of content in this atlas are protected by copyright to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law (© 2026 Florian Prentl. All rights reserved). Historical facts are cited to their sources; citation does not imply endorsement by the cited author or institution.

Research sources

References and links identify publications on which particular claims are based. Copyright remains with their respective authors and rights holders. Settlements summarizes research in its own words and uses quotations only where justified and attributed.

Maps and geography

The two-dimensional base map is derived from Natural Earth, whose geographic datasets are provided in the public domain. Historical positions and boundaries shown by Settlements are editorial reconstructions and may be approximate.

Illustrations and reconstructions

Settlement scenes, regional maps, innovation icons and aspect illustrations are created and curated for this project using AI-generated and AI-assisted imagery. They are visual interpretations rather than archaeological evidence, and all rights in their selection, editing and presentation are reserved (© 2026 Florian Prentl) to the extent permitted by law.

Permissions and concerns

If you believe material is attributed incorrectly or used without appropriate permission, contact the website operator with the page address and details of the work concerned.

Accessibility

Our target

As a private hobby project, we cannot guarantee full compliance with formal standards, but we try our best to make the site accessible and aim to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA where possible across navigation, typography, contrast, motion and media.

Feedback and assistance

If a page or feature is difficult to use, please contact the website operator and let us know what happened, which page you were using and, if comfortable, which browser or assistive technology was involved.
